Detroit Tigers to host Arab American Night at Comerica Park

The Detroit Tigers baseball team is hosting an Arab American Night Sept. 22 at Comerica Park during a Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals game.

According to its website, the Tigers are offering a package that supports an Arab American nonprofit based in Dearborn.

The package includes:

  • One ticket to the Sept. 22 game
  • A Saad Meats Sharifa Halal Knockwurst voucher
  • Donation to Leaders Advancing and Helping Communities

Leaders Advancing and Helping Communities, formerly known as the Lebanese American Heritage Club, is a human services nonprofit that works to support educational, social and economic projects in southeast Michigan.

The Sept. 22 game starts at 6:10pm. Tickets start at $25.

Lebanese man accused of scamming World Cup fans out of $250k

A Lebanese man is accused of scamming World Cup fans from Saudi Arabia out of $250,000, the Russian news agency TASS reported.

The Lebanese citizen, who resided in Moscow, was charged with fraud in absentia for the alleged scam. The unidentified man is now on the run.

According to TASS, the Lebanese man told Saudi fans he would arrange a flight from Moscow to the southern city of Volgograd in return for 15.6 million rubles, or $252,000.

After he collected the money, the man vanished and could not be reached.

“The police have found out that a Lebanese native registered in Moscow was behind this crime,” a source told the TASS news agency. “He has been charged in absentia, measures are being taken to detain him.”

Russian news agency Interfax reported that a Saudi man gave the suspect about 220,000 euros on June 24. The suspect said he would arrange for flights from the man and his friends.

The fans were set to travel to Volgograd to watch Saudi Arabia play Egypt in their final World Cup group phase match.

Saudi Arabia won the match 2-1.

Soccer star Mohamed Salah vacations in Beirut as World Cup continues

Egyptian soccer player Mohamed Salah and his family arrived in Beirut late Friday for a vacation, reports said.

According to the daily newspaper Al Liwaa, Salah, his wife Maggie and their daughter Makkah will be in Lebanon for three days. They will also meet with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri during their trip.

Salah is staying at a hotel in downtown Beirut, but the exact location is not being released for security purposes, the newspaper added.

Salah was recently dumped out of the World Cup tournament in the group stages after his team lost all three of their matches and failed to receive any points to advance to the round of 16.

However, Salah led the national team to their first World Cup since 1990 and managed to score two goals himself during the tournament.

Salah is expected to be at Liverpool FC training camp in three weeks.

The team will be at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan on July 28 for their showdown with rival Manchester United.

A Lebanese man was killed Wednesday after an argument about a World Cup game turned heated inside a Beirut coffee shop.

Mohammad Zahar was fatally stabbed while celebrating Brazil’s win with a group of friends in the suburb of Hay El Sellom.

Zahar, a Brazil supporter, allegedly got into a heated argument with a Germany supporter inside the coffee shop.

The Germany supporter, identified only by his initials H.K., allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Zahar.

The two were neighbors, media reports said.

Germany was knocked out of the World Cup after a 2-0 loss to South Korea. Brazil scored twice against Costa Rica.

Lebanese security officials have not released any information about the suspect.

Hariri to attend FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Moscow

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad Hariri will make an official visit to Russia to attend the opening ceremonies of the FIFA World Cup, Russia’s press service reported.

Hariri will reportedly visit Moscow from June 12 to June 14 and stay near the Luzhniki Stadium, where the World Cup will be held.

George Shaaban, Hariri’s advisor for Russian affairs, told news agencies he is setting up meetings with Russian leaders.

Hariri is planning to meet with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his visit, Shaaban said.

The tournament’s opening ceremony begins June 14, and will be followed by the first match between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Lebanon has taken part in World Cup qualifiers since 1994 but has yet to appear in the finals.

The visit is Hariri’s tenth visit to Moscow. His last visit was in September 2017, Russia’s press service added.

Great news for football fans in Lebanon! The Lebanese government has reached a preliminary deal to acquire the broadcast rights of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, according to a source close to Beirut-based newspaper An-Nahar.

Under the terms of the deal, Tele Liban will broadcast the World Cup games free-of-charge through its local broadcast network.

Tele Liban is the country’s public television network, owned by the Lebanese government.

According to An-Nahar, the preliminary deal allows the Lebanese government to work with SAMA Group to air the games. SAMA is the only channel in Lebanon that holds distribution rights to beIN Sports to broadcast the World Cup.

SAMA previously charged 150,000LL, or about $100, for the World Cup package, while Tele Liban aims to broadcast it for free.

The announcement comes one month after Lebanese Information Minister Melhem Riachy said negotiations were underway with SAMA group to provide live coverage of the games for free.

A source told An-Nahar that the deal will be publicly announced a few days after the tournament kicks off in Moscow on June 14.

The reported deal is expected to cost mobile operators Alfa and Touch about $5 million each on a contract fee on behalf of the government, An-Nahar added.

A Lebanese man set a Guinness World Record for the fastest crossing of Lebanon on foot — in just 1 day, 15 hours and 49 minutes!

Ali Wehbi set the record in the town of Naqoura, one of the southernmost points on the Lebanese coast.

The avid runner started the run on March 31 and ended on April 2, which is World Autism Awareness Day.

“This run is dedicated to all persons with autism, all families dealing with it,” Wehbi said. “It’s also dedicated to all autism organizations offering support, research and treatments, each and every person is touched by it directly and indirectly.”

Wehbi ran through some of Lebanon’s most iconic landmarks, including the Tropoli Castle, Raouche Rock, Saida Castle and Sour Old Heritage, the Guinness World Records reports.

The landmarks were lit in blue for the #LightItUpBlue campaign to raise awareness for autism.

Ali is known as an extreme runner and adventurer. He has a Facebook page called the International Lebanese Deserts Runner.

Two of LeBron James’ former teammates played in Lebanon

Over the years, NBA star LeBron James has had many players supporting during his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat.

Two of his former Cleveland teammates, Lee Nailon and Ronald Murray, also played in the Lebanese Basketball League.

Nailon was a second round pick by the Charlotte Hornets in the 1999 NBA Draft. After a few years and a handful of other teams, he played on the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2003-04 season alongside LeBron James.

The Cavaliers did not the qualify for the playoffs for the season, and afterwards Nailon did not remain with the team.

For the 2008 and 2009 seasons, Nailon played for the Sporting Al Riyadi Beirut Club, also known as Al Riyadi.

Meanwhile, Ronald Murray was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the 2002 NBA Draft.

He played for the Cavaliers for the 2005-06 season, alongside LeBron James who was averaging almost 31 points in the playoffs.

On April 11, 2014, he signed with Al Mouttahed Tripoli Club of Lebanon for the 2013–14 season.

Barcelona football star Cesc Fàbregas marries Lebanese girlfriend

Barcelona football star Cesc Fàbregas married his Lebanese girlfriend Daniella Semaan during a picture-perfect wedding ceremony at the lavish Cliveden House in Berkshire.

The Cliveden House is the same venue where Meghan Markle will spend the night before marrying Prince Harry.

Fàbregas, 31, and his longtime girlfriend, 42, shared photos of the big day to social media.

The Lebanese-born Semaan posted, “Just married to this handsome man that I adore.”

Fàbregas and Semaan have three children together, 5-year-old Lia, 3-year-old Capri and 1-year-old Leonardo, who all attended the wedding.

Semaan has two other children from a previous marriage to Lebanese property tycoon Elie Taktouk.

The happy couple met in 2011 when Semaan asked him for an autograph at a Japanese restaurant in London.

Fàbregas plays as a central midfielder for Premier League club Chelsea and the Spain national team.
