QUICK FACTS:

In an interview with Miss Universe Canada, Houkayem expressed pride in her Lebanese roots.

“I have also visited Lebanon numerous times and have fallen in love with it after every trip. It is one of the most intriguing places in the world as it has experienced centuries of conquest and turmoil but remains as one of the most vibrant places. Fun fact, it is the home of the Phoenicians, the civilization that created the foundation for the modern Alphabet and is characterized by charming ancient cities such as Byblos, which is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. To me, this little country conveys a message of hope and resiliency to the world, inhabiting people from eighteen different religious sects, coexisting peacefully despite all their differences.”

In the future, Houkayem hopes to become an international leader in education and development, and a UN ambassador for youth and women.

Lebanon elects new ‘Miss’ but still no president

(BEIRUT) — Oh, the irony!

A new Miss Lebanon for 2015 was elected on Monday, proving that some elections do actually exist in Lebanon!

While the presidential palace in Baabda remains empty, a panel of judges somehow managed to appoint a new Miss Lebanon to represent the country in the upcoming Miss World and Miss Universe competitions.

Clearly, representation at these pageants is far more important than representation at international security meetings and among world leaders.

The beauty is Valerie Abou Chacra, a 23-year-old student at the Lebanese American University, who received the crown from Sally Greige, Miss Lebanon 2014.

Abou Chacra beat out 13 other women with the judges’ votes, including Josline Mosleh and Cynthia Samoeil, who were first runners-up. Nour Nasrallah and Maria Tannous came in second and third place, respectively.

Greige presented Abou Chacra with the Miss Lebanon crown during a live pageant broadcast on LBC. Unlike Lebanon’s own leaders, Greige cannot extend her own term.

Political quarrels have created a stalemate in Lebanon, which has left the country without a president for over a year. President Michel Sleiman’s term expired in May 2014.

So here’s an idea — elect Valerie as president! You don’t have enough women in politics, anyway.

Once again, Lebanon proves to be the land of irony.

VIDEO: Jon Stewart responds to Miss Universe selfie debate

(MIAMI, FL) — Jewish-American comedian Jon Stewart introduced a new segment on his show on Monday he called: “What Picture Is Upsetting the Middle East This Week?”

The segment poked fun at Miss Universe competition, following controversy after Miss Israel Doron Matalon posted a selfie of herself, Miss Lebanon, Miss Japan, and Miss Slovenia.

Some called for Greige to lose the title over the selfie, especially because Lebanon and Israel are considered enemies.

“It’s a beauty pageant– they’re all enemies,” Stewart responded in the segment.

Greige says she was “photo-bombed” by Matalon and tried to distance herself from her.

“Does everything that happens between Middle Eastern countries have to be a bombing?” Stewart exclaimed.

Selfie sparks debate over Lebanese-Israeli engagement rules

(MIAMI, FL) — Miss Lebanon Sally Greige came under fire after Miss Israel Doron Matalon posted a selfie of herself, Miss Lebanon, Miss Japan, and Miss Slovenia at the Miss Universe competition in Miami.

Greige says she was ‘photo-bombed’ by Miss Israel at the competition and tried to distance herself from her. She issued the following statement on Facebook.

“To all my supporters and Lebanese citizens, I would like to thank you indeed for your continuous support of Miss Lebanon at the Miss Universe contest …The truth behind the photo: Since the first day of my arrival to participate to Miss Universe, I was very cautious to avoid being in any photo or communication with Miss Israel (that tried several times to have a photo with me) … I was having a photo with Miss Japan, Miss Slovenia and myself; suddenly Miss Israel jumped in, took a selfie, and put it on her social media…this is what happened and I hope to have your full support in the Miss Universe contest,” she wrote.

Miss Israel Doron Matalon responded with the following statement:

“It doesn’t surprise me, but it still makes me sad. Too bad you can not put the hostility out of the game, only for three weeks of an experience of a lifetime that we can meet girls from around the world and also from the neighboring country.”

Some are calling for Greige to lose the title over the selfie, especially because any contact with the Jewish state is illegal in Lebanon.
