Roadside bomb wounds three Lebanese soldiers

(ARSAL, LEBANON) — A roadside bomb wounding three Lebanese soldiers exploded near an army patrol in eastern Lebanon on Friday, the Lebanese military said in a statement.

The attack took place near the town of Arsal along the Syrian border. The army later said that two bombs were found near the scene of the blast, each weighting 15 kilograms (33 pounds).

Militants from neighboring Syria briefly seized control of Arsal in August before withdrawing with more than two dozen Lebanese security forces as hostages. The army has clashed with gunmen in the area several times since then.

Arsal and surrounding areas have been the site of clashes between soldiers and militants from al Qaeda’s Syria wing, Nusra Front, and the militant group Islamic State. Gunmen from the groups briefly took over the town in August and took a group of soldiers captive.

Also Friday, the U.S. embassy said Vice Admiral Mark Fox, Deputy Commander of U.S. Central Command, visited Lebanon and met with Prime Minister Tammam Salam, army commander Gen. Jean Kahwaji and other Lebanese military officials.

“In his meetings, Vice Admiral Fox noted the success of the LAF in its recent battle against extremist militants in Arsal,” the statement said.

Fox “reaffirmed continued U.S. support” to the Lebanese army and Lebanon’s security institutions, it said.

The U.S. has been speeding up delivery of ammunition to help Lebanon’s military combat jihadi groups. Washington has provided more than $1 billion in military assistance to Lebanon since 2006.

Two Lebanese policemen freed by militants

(ARSAL, LEBANON) — Islamist militants who captured more than 30 members of Lebanese security forces handed over two policemen to Lebanese officials on Sunday, according to security sources.

Sunni clerics from the Committee of Muslim Scholars mediated a truce between militants and the Lebanese Army and handed the policemen to the Internal Security Forces, according to the source.

The released policemen, Medyan Hasan and Kamal Misilmani, were transferred to the Baalbek region before being transported to the Ablah army barracks near Zahle, according to an Army statement.

Meanwhile, The Lebanese Army arrested 12 Syrians who were allegedly trying to enter Arsal illegally through an eastern border crossing on the village’s outskirts.

A five-day battle with the army which started on August 2 was one of the worst spillovers of Syria’s civil war into Lebanon. Security sources say dozens of militants, many of them rebels from Syria, and 19 soldiers were killed.

The fighting ended when the insurgents accepted mediation by Lebanese Sunni clerics, after which they withdrew, taking captured police and soldiers with them. 19 soldiers and 14 police are still held by the militants.

Kahwaji says freeing hostages is a top priority

jean-kahwaji-army(ARSAL, LEBANON) — Army Commander General Jean Kahwaji assured Lebanese families that the military command in Arsal will spare no effort to secure the quick release of missing soldiers believed to be held by Syrian militants.

“The issue of the captured personnel is the Army’s top priority at this time. The command will not bargain over the blood of its martyrs and wounded or the freedom of its missing soldiers,” Kahwaji said. “The Army is ready for all possibilities in order to secure the safety of its missing personnel, and to bring them back to their families and their institution.”

Earlier Tuesday the Army command confirmed the death of a soldier who was killed in the fighting against jihadist militants in Arsal over a week ago. He was among 19 other military casualties.

In the meantime, Kahwaji said the Lebanese Army saved Lebanon from jihadist before they could declare their own state.

“The Army saved Lebanon from killer ‘sectarian strife-seekers’ by the Arsal battle,” Kahwagi told local newspaper As-Safir in remarks published Monday.

“Had the Army lost, (jihadists) would have entered Akkar, and from there they would have reached the sea and declared their own state.”

At least 60 militants were killed, in addition to 19 troops and over 15 civilians in five days of clashes triggered by the arrest of a Syrian militant, Imad Ahmad Jomaa, on August 2nd.

Over 20 security personnel, including 10 troops, are still missing, believed to be held hostage by the militants who retreated into rugged territory to the east of Arsal under an agreement brokered by the Muslim Scholars Committee.

Families of missing soldiers and security forces Tuesday protested against their kidnapping, while expressing full solidarity with the Army in its fight against terrorism.

Lebanese officials declare Army support

Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt:

“The sole mission should be expressing solidarity and support with the Lebanese Army and security forces in the face of armed groups and Takfirism. There is no haven or escape for us. (Salvation comes from) support of the state, especially the Army. I wish you we could all stop the hollow political debate about the presidency which is taking place from time to time, so that we can get to the election of the president of the republic and install the foundations of the state and state obligations.”

Hezbollah MP Nawwaf Musawi:

“The aggression surprised all Lebanese today, in pictures that provoked them when they saw the assault on their national dignity, because they realized that the threat that was trivialized by some became imminent and would soon reach their own homes. Everyone in Lebanon now knows that had we not done what we did when we appointed ourselves to defend Lebanon and the resistance then our situation today would have been like Arsal. Security forces, governmental institutions and the Lebanese Army would have been subject to attacks everywhere. For this reason, we are proud to be pioneers in evaluating the size of the Takfiri threat.”

Tripoli MP Mohammad Qabbara:

“What is happening in the heroic Sunni Arsal is nothing but an episode in the Syrian-Iranian series of subjecting the Sunni people. We are warning of transforming the Army from a national institution whose duty is to protect all the Lebanese in to one resembling Al-Maliki’s Army. Had the Army deployed along the border sooner then the country would not have got to where it is today.”

Kataeb Party head Amine Gemayel:

“Without a doubt the Army will win as long as the people rally around them.”

Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil:

“What is happening in Arsal is an armed foreign terrorist force’s occupation of a Lebanese town.”

Ambassador David HaleUnited States Ambassador to Lebanon David Hale met with Lebanese Army commander General Jean Kahwagi on Sunday, expressing support for the Lebanese military’s fight against terrorism.

The U.S. Embassy in Beirut issued a statement to the media expressing condolences for the death of the Lebanese soldiers in the clashes against gunmen in northeast Lebanon.

Mideast Lebanon Syria

(ARSAL, LEBANON) — At least 11 Lebanese Army soldiers were killed in Arsal, Lebanon during clashes between Army and Syrian groups on Saturday and Sunday. Security sources say at least 13 have also been taken hostage and 30 militants have been killed.

mideast-lebanon-syria-1The 13 soldiers were taken hostage by extremist armed groups controlling many parts of Arsal, who assaulted Army vehicles and seized soldiers.

Army troops were reportedly able to take back control of Wadi Hmayyed, a neighborhood on the entrance of Arsal that has witnessed heavy, non-stop clashes.

Despite the ongoing threat to the Lebanese Army, officials say the Army is firmly vowing to carry on with its mission in northeast Lebanon until the threat is eradicated.

“The Army continued its military operations throughout the night and this morning in Arsal and its environs, as it pursued armed groups and clashed with them,” a statement by the Lebanese Army read.

“What happened today is the most dangerous incident Lebanon and the Lebanese have ever faced, because it’s made clear that there is someone planning and preparing to attack Lebanon as well as planning to sabotage the Lebanese Army and the residents of Arsal.”

Due to the escalation of the situation, a top security meeting was scheduled for Sunday afternoon, and will be headed by Prime Minister Tammam Salam in the Grand Serail, with a Cabinet meeting scheduled for Monday at noon.

The clashes in Arsal also sparked tensions in the northern city of Tripoli, where gunmen attacked Army posts and Army vehicles in the city, wounding two soldiers.
