Bassil: More Lebanese in Brazil than Lebanon

(BEIRUT, LEBANON) — Lebanese Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil said it was his duty to visit Lebanese immigrants in Brazil on Wednesday because their population doubles the Lebanese population in number.

“The number of Lebanese in Brazil is two-times the number in Lebanon. Therefore, it is my duty to visit them on a regular basis and connect them with Lebanon to strengthen economic and political ties between Lebanon and Brazil,” Bassil told Brazilian magazine Estada Sao Paolo.

He said his visit to Brazil was due to the recent Expatriate Energy Conference in Lebanon. He also expressed hope that Brazil would offer Lebanon assistance in combating terrorism.

The minister is also expected to meet Beto Richa, the Governor of the Brazilian state of Paran, which hosts the largest Lebanese community.

When asked whether he would watch the Wold Cup 2014 matches, Bassil replied, “Of course, how could anyone be in Brazil at such timing and miss it?

UCF walks for Detroit’s Capuchin Soup Kitchen

united-cedars-foundation-capuchin-soup-kitchen(SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI) — The United Cedars Foundation (UCF) walked in support of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen at River Bends Park in Shelby Township on Sunday. 75 members and supporters gathered at 8am for a walk to provide homeless Detroiters with basic necessities.

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen was established in 1929 by the ministry of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph. The founders developed a religious mission to work among the poor, providing food, temporary shelter, and other basic needs.

“The Capuchin Soup Kitchen serves meals everyday for homeless people. They provide them with clothing, hot showers, beds, whenever they need. We are proud to support them,” said Walid Korkmaz, president of the United Cedars Foundation.

UCF purchased 500 raffle tickets valued at $500.00 for the upcoming “Capuchin Souper Summer Celebration,” hosted by Lebanese-American business owner Anthony Ahee and third-generation members of the Ahee family. The celebration, which will take place on July 12 at Comerica Park, is expected to draw over 7,000 people.

“The Ahee family has been doing this for 33 years,” said Korkmaz. “It’s really special.”

Ahee Jewelers underwrites the annual free fundraiser every year, covering the cost of producing the event, entertainment, and raffle prizes. Over the past thirty years, the family has raised over $5 million for the soup kitchen.

UCF members paid $30 per family to participate in Sunday’s fundraiser. A saj breakfast with coffee, juices, and other beverages were served following the 2.5 mile walk.

“It’s very nice, they’re always doing an excellent job. People can get together and enjoy the outdoors,” said UCF member Mirna Douiahy.

‘World’s first Lebanese vodka’ prepares to launch

vodka_J2_images_6

(BEIRUT, LEBANON) — Created by R. Adam Aboulhosn, J2 vodka is a wheat-based spirit planned to launch in August this year.

Though J2 claims to be a Lebanese brand, the spirit is actually distilled and bottled in Poland using natural spring water from Lebanon.

Aboulhosn said that he believed their was a gap in the market for a local Lebanese vodka brand discovering that 1.2 million litres of vodka had been imported into Lebanon in 2010.

“We decided to produce J2 in a country with a centuries-old history of making vodka: Poland,” Aboulhosn told The Daily Star Lebanon.

“We used a combination of Lebanese ingredients, such as our distinctive snowmelt water, alongside Poland’s golden wheat-distilled ethanol, which is arguably the finest in the world.”

However, Aboulhosn added that he hopes J2 can be entirely produced in Lebanon in the future.

The brand, although currently only available in Lebanon, is eying future distribution across the Middle East and Africa.
